What is integrative oncology? While ridicule for seeking alternative treatments for cancer still runs rampant in most conventional circles, more and more physicians are embracing an evidence-based integrative approach in the battle against breast cancer. Integrative oncology, or integrative medicine, refers to the use of complementary, or integrative therapies in collaboration with conventional medicine. These therapies work in concert with standard treatment methods (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation) to treat the patient’s body, mind and spirit. According to integrative physician Dr. Laurie Blanscet, traditional treatment tends to focus just on the cancer, and forgets that there is a person behind the tumor. Dr. Laurie explains that one of the most important facets to fighting and healing disease such as breast cancer is to reduce inflammation, reduce stress and rebuild the immune system. Nutrition and stress reduction techniques such as yoga and meditation are key components of an integrative or complementary approach to healing. If faced with a cancer diagnosis, find out if an integrative treatment approach is right for you!
